National Book Critics Circle Awards

The National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) has announced the finalists for its 2009 awards.  Every year the  NBCC selects the best books in six categories:  autobiography, biography, criticism, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

J.D. Salinger, author of the famed The Catcher in the Rye, has died at the age of 91.

American Library Association Notable Books

The American Library Association Notable Books Council announced its selections for the 2010 Notable Books List.  Since 1944, the goal of the Notable Books Council has been to make available to the nation’s readers a list of 25 very good, very readable, and at times very important fiction, nonfiction, and poetry books for the adult reader.

In addition to the Notable Books List, the American Library Association announced the 2010 Reading List, a list recognizing the best books in eight genres. 

Robert B. Parker

Robert B. Parker, creator of the famed Spenser and Jesse Stone novels, has died at the age of 77.  Parker wrote more than 60 books in the detective fiction, western, and young adult genres.  His last Jesse Stone novel, Split Image, will be released in late February.  For a complete list of Parker's books click here.

Costa Book Awards

Winners of the 2009 Costa Book Awards have been announced.  Colm Toibin took the Novel Award for Brooklyn.  Brooklyn, a story of love and loss centered on a young woman emigrating from Ireland to New York in the 1950s, was one of last year's most critically-acclaimed novels.  The 2009 Costa Book of the Year will be announced on January 26.
